The Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) process represents an organic integration of biological wastewater treatment technology and membrane separation technology. After biological treatment within the reactor has broken down and converted organic pollutants, microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are used to separate solids from liquids, thereby achieving the final purification of the wastewater. The membrane modules installed within the reactor can replace the secondary clarifiers and conventional filtration and adsorption units found in traditional processes, allowing for the separation of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and sludge retention time (SRT), and ensuring a stable, high-quality effluent.
- The separation function of membrane technology thoroughly separates suspended solids, colloidal matter and microbial communities from the treated water, effectively replacing sedimentation, filtration and adsorption equipment used in conventional processes, resulting in more stable and higher-quality effluent.
- The retention function of the integrated membrane bioreactor allows the microbial community to reside within the reactor, achieving a separation of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and sludge retention time (SRT). This enhances biochemical treatment efficiency whilst ensuring flexible and stable system operation.
- The integrated membrane bioreactor features a simple process flow and is easy to integrate; the treatment system occupies only half the footprint of conventional processes. System operation is controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC), effectively reducing labour intensity and operating costs.
